To tell you the truth, I haven’t been to an Applebee’s in years. If I’m going to go out to eat, I’m not going to choose someplace that can’t be described as anything better than “mediocre.” Their food is okay, but who wants to pay good money for okay?
That said, if I were a paying customer of that franchise, you can bet your boots I wouldn’t be now. Perhaps you have missed it on the internet news lately, but there has been this whole deal where an Applebee’s waitress in St. Louis posted a photo to Reddit of a receipt she got from a customer:
A large group had come in to the restaurant after church one day, and they got into a little verbal altercation about the company policy that said groups of 8 or more would have an automatic 18% gratuity added to their bill. They tried to get around it by asking for separate checks. When that didn’t work, their pastor got nasty about it, as you can see from her note on the receipt. Not only did she point out how she gives “to God” (I guess she just sets it out on the sidewalk or something, because I’m pretty sure putting it in the donation box or plate at church means you’re giving it to your church), but then identified herself as a pastor. This must have been to really reinforce that she’s acting righteously by stiffing the waitress entirely.
Well, it gets worse. The waitress who posted the photo was fired from her job after the pastor, Alois Bell, called the restaurant to complain about how her professional reputation was besmirched by the photo going viral on the web. Here’s what she had to say:
“My heart is really broken. I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and ministry.”
Really, Alois? It’s interesting that you decided to just keep going with it, then. Because now you’ve brought the embarrassment to your church and ministry, ruined your reputation, and taken money out of the pocket of someone who didn’t deserve your bullshit. And Applebee’s? They decided to side with their sanctimonious, bitchy as all hell customer who did something unethical and certainly not What Jesus Would Do, and they shit-canned one of their workers instead. The internet backlash is building, and I’m glad to be a small part of that.
Applebee’s. They suck. Their food sucks. And the way they treat their employees sucks. Eat somewhere else.
